Too short skirts? Peer influence and attention towards looking 'hip' or just simply don't care?
QUOTE:
Are short high school uniform skirts in bad taste? Posters urging high school girls to wear longer uniform skirts are causing controversy in Niigata Prefecture.
A group of teachers in charge of student counseling and guidance produced three kinds of posters and delivered them to all high schools in the prefecture in December in an effort to lengthen uniform skirts, which they think are currently too short and ‘‘lack good taste.’’ The teachers are also concerned that students wearing short skirts could become targets for molesters and other crimes.
One of the posters reads, ‘‘You can smarten your mind and your skirts if you’re motivated.’’
But the response from students has been cool, with many saying that devoting such attention to their skirts makes little sense.
The battle between schools and students over uniforms is not new as students have always tried to express their individuality under rigid dress codes.
SOCIAL x PSYCHOLOGICAL
Peer pressure may cause people to think that they should make certain decisions. Even if they may not like a certain trend, or a certain item, they will still buy them as they have friends who own them or are pestering them to buy them.
Psychological x Social
Most youths have the mentality that makes them feel affected everytime they do not get the things in trend that they want. They think that this affects them socially as they afraid that they may loose their friends. They are afraid of being looked down upon and this will affect their self-confidence and self-esteem.
They refuse to listen to their teachers' advice to stop rolling up their skirts to tune in to what their 'fashionable' friends are doing. They remain cool and are determined to not change this habit so as to stay like this by not doing the government (of Niigata) and their school's wishes.
Measuring of skirts, and urging girls to keep their skirts longer.
